Systems Thinking Definition and Application ***Define systems thinking, Comprehend the uses and application of systems thinking in healthcare, and understand the link between leadership, systems thinking, and interprofessional collaborative practice. Systems thinking – is acknowledging how systems interact and each component influences each other. It is based on complexity science The study of complex systems particularly the patterns of relationships within them, how they are sustained, how they self-organize, and how outcomes emerge and is Used to achieve better outcomes, reduce complexities, and minimize errors + variations in practice. Main component of a system includes: Micro [Specific patients and care teams] Messo [organization where care takes place] and Macro [The healthcare systems and the broader societal issue] Overall goal is to reinforce the need for nurse accountability towards safety and quality care + promotes patient centered care & evidence-based practice. Development and Importance ***Linear Thinker’s vs System Thinkers ***Explore ways to develop systems thinking. o o o o o Seek to understand the big picture. Surface and test/question assumptions. Resist making quick conclusions. Notice patterns and trends in systems. Recognize how system’s structure causes its behavior. ***Comprehend the importance of systems thinking in creating a culture of safety, not blame. o Identify cause and effect relationships.
