Design Thinking and Nursing Concepts and Process ***Define design thinking, human centered design, and user centered design o Design thinking is an iterative, non-linear process which focuses on a collaboration between designers and users to develop innovative solutions based on the needs of the customers. • Tends to look at the bigger picture. • Relies on finding the harmony between implementation, ideation, and inspiration/ discovery. • Utilizes “How Might We” Statements help guide idea generation. • And finds the sweet spot in innovation (desirable, feasible, and viable) o Human centered design is aimed at developing a product with a high degree of usability and user experience. • Is about inclusivity and accessibility and aims to include all humans as possible users of a product. • The design and research phase focuses on all humans as potential users of the product, and not just a specific target group. o User-Centred Design puts the focus solely on a target group of users in the design process. • The design and research phase aimed at understanding and designing for a predicted user group of the end product Design Thinking (DT) is a process, whereas Human-Centred Design (HCD) and User-Centred Design (UCD) are mindsets. ***Understand the process of design thinking as a tool to promote innovation and creativity. The design thinking process is broken down into five steps. Application and Outcomes ***Appreciate the value of design thinking for developing creative confidence to successfully lead transformative personal and professional change. Environments and Practice ***Identify applicable environments and possible places for design thinking in nursing practice and healthcare. ***Refer to studies employing design thinking methods in nursing for improved patient outcomes.
