Innovation and Nursing Innovation Concepts ***Recognize the changing role of nurses in contemporary healthcare. ***Define innovation and creativity. Innovation is the ability to generate and execute new ideas. Creativity is the ability to look past the obvious—to transcend traditional ways of seeing the world to create something new. Types of innovation include: o Incremental or evolutionary • Building on existing knowledge or products. • The focus is on continuous improvement. • may lead to improving performance, reduce cost or price, or add new features to enhance customer satisfaction. Example: Cell phones (periodic updates) o Disruptive • Creating a significant change or innovation in the field. • Typically refereed to as Revolutionary, radical, transformational, or rule breaking • Revamps old systems, creates new players and new markets, delivers dramatic value to stakeholders. Example: google, streaming, eBooks, music listening devices, electric cars o Process Creating a new or significantly improved production or delivery method. Includes significant changes in techniques, equipment and/or software. Marketing • Altering the marketing method by significantly changing product design or packaging, product placement, product promotion or pricing (4 P’s) Organizational • Altering how things are organized in business practices, workplace organization or external relations. • • o o The rating of an innovation is determined by. - Desirability (human factors: Do people want it and need it?) - Viability (Business: will the financial investment worth be returned in sales/ outcomes?) - and Feasibility (Technical: can it be done?) ***Compare the innovation Cycle and the nursing process. Implementing Innovation ***Discuss examples of innovation and understand which process steps are involved in implementing innovations into practice The application of knowledge (interventions and innovations) can take place at multiple levels: - The level of clinical practice (Micro-level) - The organization or place of work (Meso-level) - The healthcare system (macro-level) Within nursing when creating and integrating our innovations we utilise the ADPIE nursing process in problem solving Problem solving is an active process that starts with a problem and ends with a solution. The problem-solving process consists of five steps: 1) Identify the problem (assessment, diagnosis). 2) Gather and analyze data (outcome identification). 3) Generate alternatives and select an action (planning). 4) Implement the selected action (implementation). 5) Evaluate the action (evaluation) ***Describe how individual creativity fosters innovation and how to lead such change. nurse leaders foster creativity and innovation through: - Employee engagement to assess needs, staff level of satisfaction and motivation. - Role Modelling where we demonstrate desired behaviours. Nurses should seek out opportunities to participate in innovation opportunities in the future. - Education to promote creative or design thinking - Rewards/incentives to motivate nurses to be more innovative. - Team Collaboration to bring together diverse skill sets and inspire new and creative ways of thinking. - Collaboration with stakeholders, managers, or other health disciplines can increase engagement of nurses in this process - encouraging employees to: • • • • • “Think like a traveller” (ask lots of questions, turning a fresh eye on your surroundings, approaching problems as a novice.) Empathize. (Get to know the population you are designing for.) Ask WHY question (ask people to show you the things they interact with, take pictures, draw it, and think aloud) Reframe challenges into opportunities (step back from what is an obvious solution and alter their point of view to uncover what the real issue is, look for ways to battle resistance or mental blocks, and think about the opposite by flipping the question around.) And build a support network (a system where they can collaborate with others and bounce ideas off) Barriers and Facilitators *** Explore various barriers and facilitators to implementing innovations, as well as successful implementation strategies, based on available evidence.
