Marijuana Legalization I. II. Introduction A. Attention Getter: I will ask the class if at some point in life either you or someone you know has tried marijuana. B. Thesis: There are both pros and cons to legalizing marijuana. C. Preview: I will talk about what marijuana is and the different forms it can be found as well as the negative aspects that come with legalization of cannabis and then talk about the positives. D. Ethos: My home state of California has just legalized recreational use of marijuana and I have done extensive research over the financial benefits that come with legalization as well as the societal outcomes. Body A) What is marijuana? 1. Explain what cannabis is, the names it is called and in what forms cannabis is offered. (NIDA,2017) B) Marijuana Legalization comes with some negative outcomes. 1. There is a potential for users to become addicted to it and or become dependent on it. (Is marijuana addictive, 2018) 2. It is considered by some as a “gateway drug” which will lead to higher use of alcohol, cigarettes and lead to other drugs. (DuPont, 2016) C) Marijuana Legalization can lead to positive outcomes for society. 1. Controlled legalization would create a substantial and much needed tax revenue. (Bishop-Henchman & Scarboro, 2016) 2. A majority of the population is in support of marijuana legalization. (Geiger, 2018) 3. Cannabis has demonstrated medical uses and therefore does not meet the criteria for a schedule 1 substance. (For Which Symptoms or Conditions Might Marijuana Provide Relief, 2008) III. Conclusion A) Restate Thesis/Review: Marijuana can be used for medical and recreational purposes and these should be taken into consideration when considering the pros and cons of legalizing marijuana. B) Memorable Close: So now that you have heard what the potential pros and cons of legalizing marijuana do you think that the government should legalize marijuana?
