Radiology- Production of X-ray 1. Turn power on, a light will indicate that the machine is ready to operate. If not preset by the manufacture, the radiographer must set the correct milliamperage and kilovoltage by adjusting the dials on the control panel. 2. Set timer for the desired exposer time. 3. Place the image receptor into the holding device and position in the patient’s oral cavity. You will need to choose which type of x-ray you would like to take either of anterior, horizontal or a bite wing. 4. Utilizing the extension arm and yoke, adjust the tube head by aligning the PID so that the central beam of radiation is directed toward the center of the image receptor at the appropriate horizontal or vertical angulations. 5. Depress the button and hold down firmly until exposure is completed. The audible signal and xray exposure indicator light will activate for the duration of the exposure. - During step 5: the current enters the filament circuit of the x-ray machine. A step-down transformer slows down the cathodes and then a step-up transformer speeds up the cathodes and shoots them to the anode. Separating electrons from their atoms. - The changes in the x-ray spectrum that result when the exposure time is increased while the tube current (mA) and voltage (kVp) remain constant. When the exposure time is doubled, the number of photons generated is doubled, but the range intensity of photons energies is unchanged. The amount of radiation that a patient receives is determined by the mAs (mA x time) - The percentage of x-ray beams that allowed to exit the PID are only 1% verse the 99% that is a negative wavelength and not as strong to have the penetrating power. The negative wavelength is called scattered rays. 6. Move the appropriate protected location away from the tube head and remove the image receptor and holder from the patient’s oral cavity after the exposure. 7. When the procedure is complete, fold the tube head support extension arm into the closed, neutral position. 8. Turn off the power to the X-ray machine.
