Inferences and Assumptions: • The words inference and assumption will be used frequently Inference: • Defined as something that MUST BE TRUE ○ Must find an item that must be true based on the information presented in the argument. • This is what follows from an argument - the conclusion • Inference is made AFTER the argument is complete and follows from the argument. Assumption: • Simply the same as an unstated premise ○ What must be true in order for the argument to be true. ○ Commonsense assumptions • What is taken for granted while making an argument • Assumptions occur BEFORE the argument being made and follows from the argument.
