LSAT PREP Sage Training – Week 1 Logical Reasoning Section Correct and Incorrect Answer Choices for Must be True Questions Correct Answers:  These types of answers will always be correct in must be true/most strongly supported. 1. Paraphrased Answers: o Answers that restate a portion of the stimulus in different terms o They are easy to miss - not the same. o Answer is drawn directly from stimulus. 2. Answers that are the sum of two or more stimulus statements (Combination Answers). o Any answer choice that would result from combining two or more statements in the stimulus will be correct. Incorrect Answers:  There are several types of answers that are incorrect and appear frequently. 1. Could Be True or Possibly True Answers o Criteria requires you to find an answer choice that MUST be true or is quite strongly supported. o Answers that are even likely to be true or could be true are incorrect. o Fail the fact test and lack direct support. 2. Exaggerated Answers o Take information from the stimulus and stretch that to make a broader statement that is not supported by the stimulus. o The form of answer is a variation of a could be true answer. It is possible but not proven. 3. New Information Answers o "new" information may not be new information. o Closely examine any new information you encounter. New information not mentioned in the stimulus. Might sound logical but not directly supported. To avoid incorrectly eliminating a new information answer follow these steps:  Examine the scope of the argument to make sure the "new" information does not fall within the sphere of a term or concept in the stimulus or a commonsense assumption.  Examine the answer to make sure it is not the consequence of combining stimulus elements.  o o 4. The Shell Game: o An idea or concept is raised in the stimulus and then a very similar idea appears in an answer choice, but the idea is changed just enough to be incorrect but still attractive. 5. The Opposite Answer o Provides an answer that is completely opposite of the stated facts of the stimulus. o Appears more frequently in Weaken and Strengthen questions. 6. The Reverse Answer o Simply a reversed statement o Rearranges elements to create a new, unsupported statement. o Example:  Many people have some type of security system in their home.  Incorrect Answer: some people have many types of security systems in their home.
