Naked and Afraid Discussion Questions 1. What are some of the natural resources that Laura and Clint use to survive their 21 day challenge? - The plants, the fruits, the beach, the trees and branches, leaves, lobsters 2. What are some of the tangible manmade resources they use? - MarchetÝ, bow drill, water 3. Besides the natural resources and manmade resources you identified in questions one and two, what other “resources” do Laura and Clint use? - A machetÝ, swimmers gogles 4. Think about food, clothing, shelter, water, and fire. For each, indicate whether it: 1) can be “taken” directly from Mother Nature and used, or 2) must be produced (or, transformed) via human labor. - Shelter can be taken from mother nature as well as water, clothing and fire. Real clothing must be produced from human labor but in this show they use leaves as clothes. 5. Consider clothing, shelter, and fire. Which of these items did Laura and Clint manage to “produce” first for themselves? Did this turn out to be a wise decision or not? - They first build themselves a shelter. It was smart because they need it to surrive. 6. List some of the “jobs” you see Laura and Clint perform. - wrapping her cut finger - starting a fire - building a house 7. Was one of those job more important than any of the others? - No because they all factor into their survival 8. All economies in one way or another involve cooperation and dependence. In what ways do Laura and Clint cooperate and depend upon one another? - They depend on each other to help collect food and start the fire as well as making a shelter, they compromise on where to build their shelter. 9. How do Laura and Clint decide (or work out) who will do which jobs? 10. Do Laura and Clint ever argue over who is doing work? If so, why is this important? - Clint gets annoyed with having to do things like opening the coconuts. 11. Do you see any “hierarchy” develop between the two survivalists? If so, what is the basis of this hierarchy? - Laura usually thinks she’s better than Clint and thinks she does more than he does. 12. How do the two survivalists decide (or work out) who gets to eat the food they manage to acquire? - Laura offers Clint sea urchins but he does not want but she still shares her food with him. 13. Near the end of the three weeks, Laura’s lobster trap eventually works. She share the lobsters with Clint. In your opinion, would she have been entitled to deny Clint lobster owing to the fact that he contributed nothing (or very little) to its acquisition? - No because he has helped her in different ways. 14. Why might Laura have had an interest in sharing the lobsters with Clint despite the fact that he contributed nothing (or very little) to its acquisition? - Because she knows that he has no protein and he has helped her throughout this experience in other ways. 15. What does Naked and Afraid have to do with economics? - You have to make mass choices that will help you stay afloat, just like in econmoica.
