Focused Review Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies 1. Medications for Children and Adolescents Who Have Mental Health Issues: Priority Findings Relating to Adverse Effects of Atomoxetine (Active Learning Template Medication).  The adverse effects of Atomoxetine are appetite or growth suppression, weight loss, GI upset which may include vomiting nausea, and upper abdominal pain. In children and adolescents suicidal ideation may occur. Hepatoxicity may also occur, as well as headaches, insomnia, and irritability. Reduction of Risk Potential 2. Brain Stimulation Therapies: Purpose of Succinylcholine (Active Learning Template Medication)  The purpose of Succinylcholine is to paralyze a client’s muscle during the seizure activity which will decrease injury during ECT. This medication will also paralyze the respiratory muscles so the client requires assistance with breathing and oxygenation. Basic Care and Comfort 3. Bipolar Disorders: Planning Care to Promote Sleep for a Client Who Is Experiencing Acute Mania (Active Learning Template - System Disorder)  To promote sleep during acute mania frequent rest periods should be implemented, a decrease of stimulation without isolating the client, and provide outlets for physical activity but, make sure the activity does not last too long. Psychosocial Integrity 4. Personality Disorders: Communicating With a Client Who Has Antisocial Personality Disorder (Active Learning Template - System Disorder)  The nurse should set limits and consistency with someone who has an antisocial personality disorder. The client should also be offered realistic choices to enhance the client’s sense of self control. The nurse should also have a firm but, supportive approach with consistent care. Safety and Infection Control 5. Mental Health Issues of Children and Adolescents: Priority Intervention for a Child Who Has ADHD (Active Learning Template - System Disorder)  A nurse should offer a calm, respectful but, firm approach. Offer short explanations but, clear limits. Focus on strengths, and not just the problems. Assist the child with coping mechanisms and make sure you have the child’s attention before giving directions.
