Secondary survey Like detective work. Thorough investigation Ensures that no crucial injuries are missed. When to perform: After completing the primary survey and addressing the immediate life threats. The patient should be stable at this point. Head to toe examination If awake take a history or a collateral history AMPLE Hx. Allergies Medications Past medical history Last meal -> food and fluids. Events leading to the trauma. Exclude fatal trauma Investigations Laparotomy: Hemodynamically unstable and positive FAST CT head, neck, chest, abdo /pelvis (double contrast) aortogram Angiography, when suspecting a: Pelvic injury Retroperitoneal bleeding Organ specific embolization Special situations Burns: First aid Early intubation in airway/inhalation injury Escharotomies Hypothermia Warm IV fluids High voltage electricity Low threshold for measuring compartment pressures Myoglobinuria
