Concept of Immune Surveillance  Definition: Immune surveillance refers to the continuous monitoring and elimination of abnormal cells by the immune system to prevent the development of cancer.  Mechanisms: The immune system detects and destroys tumor cells through several mechanisms, including: o Recognition of Tumor Antigens: Tumor cells express abnormal proteins (tumor antigens) that are recognized as foreign by the immune system. o Activation of Immune Cells: The detection of tumor antigens by antigen-presenting cells (APCs) leads to the activation of T cells (CD8+ cytotoxic T cells and CD4+ helper T cells) and B cells. o Killing of Tumor Cells: Activated CD8+ T cells kill tumor cells directly, while antibodies produced by B cells can mark tumor cells for destruction by other immune mechanisms. 2.
