Cystadenofibroma Definition: Cystadenofibroma is a rare type of ovarian tumor characterized by both cystic and fibrous components. It is a benign tumor that arises from the ovarian epithelium and contains a mixture of fibrous (stromal) tissue and cystic (fluid-filled) areas. The tumor typically presents as a solid mass with cystic areas, and it can be classified as a type of benign epithelial ovarian tumor. Characteristics:  Histology: Cystadenofibromas are distinguished by their combination of fibrous stroma and cystic structures lined by epithelial cells. The cysts are usually lined with a single layer of columnar or cuboidal epithelium. The stroma can be dense and fibrous, giving the tumor its name.  Gross Appearance: On gross examination, these tumors often appear as well-circumscribed masses with both solid and cystic components. They may range in size from small nodules to larger masses. Symptoms:  Asymptomatic: Many cystadenofibromas are asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally during imaging studies or surgery for other conditions.  Abdominal Discomfort: Larger tumors can cause abdominal or pelvic pain, discomfort, or a feeling of fullness.  Abdominal Mass: In some cases, a palpable mass may be detected during a physical examination. Diagnosis:  Imaging Studies: Pelvic ultrasound or CT scan is commonly used to visualize the tumor. Imaging typically shows a complex mass with both cystic and solid areas.  Histological Examination: A definitive diagnosis is made through histological analysis of tissue samples obtained via surgical excision. The presence of both fibrous stroma and cystic structures is characteristic of cystadenofibroma.  Tumor Markers: While tumor markers such as CA-125 may be elevated in some cases, they are not specific to cystadenofibromas and are more commonly used to assess other ovarian tumors. Prognosis:  Excellent: The prognosis for cystadenofibroma is generally excellent. As a benign tumor, it does not metastasize and has a low risk of recurrence following complete surgical removal. Prevention:  No Specific Prevention: There are no specific preventive measures for cystadenofibroma.
