Games & Social Identity in Danish Cafés Introduction What type of psychological connections can game play build? We used a qualitative approach to observe how games interact with social identity, community building, and hygge in Denmark. Theory and Locations Hygge: The art of creating intimacy, using games to build a sense of community, comradeship, and conviviality Situated Learning: How outsiders integrate into unfamiliar communities (Lave & Wenger 1991) Bastard Café: Games create a shared safe space to come together Dupong Klub and Bar: Table tennis makes night life more social for everyone Dongyuan Restaurant, Café Malmö, & TapHouse: Not centered around games Methods Grounded Theory: A set of well developed categories (themes, concepts) that are systematically interrelated through statements of relationship to form a theoretical frame work that explains some relevant psychological phenomenon (Strauss & Corbin 1998) Field Studies: Recorded active observations, interactions, and interviews (Williams 2015) Observational Findings 1) Game cafés, restaurants, and bars each have unique integration pathways 2) Games most frequently facilitate connections between individuals seeking connection through game 3) A semi-permeable psychological barrier, defined by explicit game content, implicit community context, and physical space, exists between “active players”, “passive players” and “non-players” References Conclusions Lave, J., & Wenger, E.
