FUNCTIONALITY OF SELF-CONCEPT IN SPORT Understanding the Complexity of a Positive Self-Concept  The concept of a "positive" self-concept can vary and needs clarification.  Questions arise about whether a high self-concept is functional if it doesn't align with actual performance.  The functionality of self-concept should consider both level and congruency with reality. Diverse Perspectives on Self-Concept  Recommendations regarding the reality relatedness of self-concept vary, ranging from realism to positive-realistic self-concept.  Most intervention studies aim to increase self-concept but often disregard veridicality.  A realistic self-assessment or moderate overestimation seems ideal.  Self-concept interventions should aim for a "positive-realistic self-concept." Multidimensional Self-Concept  Self-concept is multidimensional and hierarchically structured.  Compensation possibilities within the self-concept system.  Individual importance hypothesis suggests that dimensions with greater personal relevance influence self-esteem more significantly.  Considerations from personality psychology, developmental psychology, and sport science highlight the importance of differential perspectives. The Role of Physical Self-Concept  Physical self-concept, especially in children and adolescents, plays a crucial role in the development of general self-concept.  Individual importance hypothesis: The importance attached to physical performance can affect general self-concept.  Differential perspective needed due to the varying effects of sport activities on individuals. Conclusion  The complexity of self-concept in sport involves the level, congruency with reality, and individual importance.  Self-concept interventions should aim for a positive-realistic self-concept while considering differential perspectives.
