SELF-PRESENTATION IN SPORT AND EXERCISE 19.3 Self-Presentation Definition of Self-Presentation:  Initially defined by Baumeister (1982) as "the use of behavior to communicate some information about oneself to others."  Extended by Leary and Kowalski (1990) as the "process by which individuals attempt to control the impressions others form of them." Motivation for Self-Presentation:  Impression motivation: The degree to which individuals are interested in managing others' impressions of them in a specific social situation.  Heightened when the situation's outcomes have implications for goals, selfesteem, or identity development. Impression Construction:  Involves the choices and strategies used to create desired or avoid undesired images.  Determined by factors such as self-concept, desired and undesired identity images, role-related norms, values of the target audience, and beliefs about current and potential social image.
