Meiosis and Mitosis Differences No. of divisions Meiosis There are two nuclear divisions that occur in meiosis. They are known as Reduction for Meiosis I and Division for Meiosis II. Daughter Cells Four haploid daughter cells are created. They are genetically different. It contains half of the number of chromosomes as there were in the original cell. Genetic variation occurs in genetic recombination takes place this is when crossing over happens in prophase I, and then the chromosome rearrangement in metaphase I. This is when two chromosomes of homologous pairs have the equal amount and is exchanged with each other. At this stage they are replicated into 2 strands and known as sister chromatids. They also produce sex cells or gametes. Occurs in the final phase of cell division in meiosis when cytoplasm of two daughter cells is separated. Mitosis A single cell division called a diploid cell,is divided into two diploid cells. Diploid cell has two cell divisions that yields into four cells which are haploid, known as gametes. Two diploid daughter cells are created they are genetically identical cells. The cell contains the same number of chromosomes. There is no genetic variation in mitosis. This is because they produced offspring that have the same genetic makeup as their parents. Prophase I & Metaphase I , this is where homologous chromosomes are paired up with each other and different amount of genetic material is exchanged to form chromosome sister chromatids. The homologous chromosomes within the cell wont ordinary pair up or undergo the genetic combination. Two identical cells are created. The parent cell is known as the original cell. The new cells are called daughter cells. One parent cell in each identical cell. This occurs in prophase which is the first phase of mitosis. This is when the physical shapes of the cell’s chromosome can be seen. No DNA replication occurs. It occurs towards the end of the cycle when the division of cytoplasm takes place and produces distinct daughter cells. Nuclear envelope is disassembled during the process of mitosis, this is when smooth outline becomes crumpled and undefined. This is the end stage of prophase and the beginning of prometaphase.
