Diagram: Illustration of oxygen supply through different layers: Epicardium, Myocardium, and Endocardium. Endocardial region is very prone to ischemia (oxygen deficiency). Prone to extravascular compression. Points: Vasodilation of vasculature alters metabolism. This means that when the coronary vessels dilate, metabolism increases. No O₂ supply from ventricular blood: Endocardial region is highly prone to ischemia. Metabolism of Cardiac Myocyte: Glycolysis: Breakdown of glucose occurs, leading to the degradation of ATP into adenosine. Adenosine causes vasodilation of coronary arterioles, leading to increased coronary blood flow. This occurs in response to conditions with increased metabolic demand. During increased metabolic demand: There is a greater requirement for oxygen and ATP for maintaining cellular functions. No O₂ available: During cardiac ischemia, there is decreased O₂, which is required for the re-synthesis of ATP from adenosine. Resting Blood Flow (Coronary): At rest: 7–10 ml/100g/min During exercise: 150 ml/100g/min
