Theory explaining crime in SA Strain theory: Social structures within a Society may encourage citizens to commit crime the left behind' or deprived group feel they have not had access to the Same luxuries or well being as the rich group of people in the same society -This perception is one of the reasons people use to justify taking things from a person employer who has more than they have a type of entitlement Ineffective policing: -low conviction rate: Criminals commit crime very low chance of being caught - Corruption: bribing police I monetary throw out evidence so case gets dismissed due to inefficient evidence -Special task forces higher conviction rate -majority of arrests are results of a tip off/luck Combination of factors: one single factor is seldom cause for Crime many reasons why an individual would become involved in crime -The younger a person is when they first become involved in crime the greater chances that they will become seriously violent criminals -NB to look offenders conscious choice to get involved in crime - This choice is made irrespective of predisposing factors -most criminals choose to commit crime -This is based on the rational choice theory: the criminal will weigh up the coster against the benefits of the action *does not eximine why the individual committed the crime (poverty) but looks what the criminal will gain from committing the crime (financial gain)
