ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATE: Medication allopurinol MEDICATION __________________________________________________________________________ REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________ C CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION Expected Pharmacological Action This medication is used to treat gout and hyperuricemia. Therapeutic Use Antigout Complications Headache, peripheral neuropathy, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dysphagia, and paresthesia. Medication Administration Adult: tabs- 100mg & 300mg injection-various. Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity to allopurinol or its components. Nursing Interventions Interactions Ace inhibitors, chlorpropamide, cyclophosphamide, dicumarol, thiazidine diuretics, and uricosuric agents. -Obtain CBC and uric acid level. -Monitor for signs of allergic reaction (skin rash). -Monitor fluid intake. -Asses patients extremities and joints for pain and redness. Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Normal serum and uric acid levels. -Decrease in pain and inflammation. -Take with medications and drink plenty of water. -Report unusual bleeding or bruising. -Gout attacks may occur more often at the beginning of treatment.
