Triple alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy Triple Entete : France, Britain, Russia The Central Powers (mainly Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey) The Allies (mainly France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United States) The eastern front of the great war started on August 17, 1914 it happened because the Russian general Pavel Rennenkampf’s first army invaded eastern Prussia and at this time the French were in the battle or Marne the Battle of the Marne was between Germany, France, and Britain. It happened because Germany tried to invade France, and the Allies were retreating until they reached the outskirts of Paris. The Allies won the Battle of the Marne, but this led to a trench warfare that lasted for four years, with neither side winning on the western front. For the next four years none of the powerful weapons like machine guns, big cannons (artillery), poison gas, or tanks could help either side win or make big progress in the war. The French plan underestimated the Germans strength the French thought they would take the same route as the Ardennes to invade but instead Germany invaded through Belgium. The Germans crossed the frontier into Belgium on august 4 which they successful occupied the town of liege and citadel. The Belgium withdrew its troops to the entrenched camp of Antwerp to slow down Germany after they violated Belgium’s neutrality. This allowed the German army to enter Brussels on August 20, 1914. However, the Russians had already concentrated four fully supplied armies against the 39 Austrian divisions. On August 30, 1914, the Russians launched their offensive. By the third week of September, Hötzendorf ordered a general retreat, and the Austrians abandoned the province of Galicia, and lost over 130,000 soldiers. The year ended with limited Austrian attacks toward Warsaw. By May 1915, the Germans took over command of the Eastern Front and sent many of their troops to support the weakening Austrian forces. On May 1, the Germans launched a sharp attack on the Russian lines at Gorlice, which resulted in a major Russian defeat. The Italians betrayed the Germans and the Austria Hungarians their partners in the triple allies by attacking Austria in 1915 Italy then joined the triple Entente which became known as allied powers / allies at the same time Germans joined efforts with Austrians and Bulgarians which defeated Russian forces and pushed Serbia out of the war this enabled the Germans to the strengthen their power In the east and return back to maintain an offensive position in the west          In 1909, the Young Turks took control of Turkey and were influenced by Germany. Germany and Turkey secretly agreed to support each other if war broke out, with Turkey fighting on Germany's side if Germany backed Austria-Hungary against Russia. The Turco-German alliance was officially formed in August 1914. On November 1, 1914, Russia declared war on Turkey. As a result of the alliance, Germany created a strategy to weaken Russia and the British. On November 5, 1914, the British and French declared war on the Ottomans. By 1917, Lawrence of Arabia, a British officer, encouraged Arab princes to revolt against the Ottoman Empire. The British forces, based in Egypt, mobilized troops from India, New Zealand, and Australia to help destroy the Ottoman Empire. After being neutral for two and a half years, the USA entered World War I. They joined the Allies because of broken diplomatic ties with Germany and the sinking of three US merchant ships, which caused many deaths. President Wilson then declared war on Germany. The US entry strengthened the Allies’ military against Germany. US factories produced enough weapons for both the US troops and their Allies, such as France and Britain. Since the Allies were running out of money for supplies, the US contribution became critical. By September 1918, the US Army was the second largest, with 1.2 million American soldiers fighting in France against the German troops.
