Prelab 12: Protective Equipment and Prophylactic Procedures Answer the participation activity questions below prior to attending lab. Refer to Chapters 1 and 13 from Orthopedic Taping, Wrapping, Bracing, and Padding to answer the following questions. 1. Identify seven ways health care professionals can mitigate vulnerability to liability related to protective equipment? a. Select and purchase only high-quality equipment and padding from reputable manufacturers b. Become familiar with the warning labels and intended purposes for all equipment and padding purchase c. Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when fitting the equipment and padding purchased d. Instruct the individual on the use, application, and care of the equipment and padding e. Ensure that the individuals read the warning labels and understand the use and care of the equipment or padding. Have individuals sign a form stating that they understand the warning labels and risks involved with the sport or activity f. Continually monitor the use of and inspect the condition of the equipment and padding g. Perform regular maintenance on the equipment and padding as recommended by the manufacturer 2. List and describe the agencies that regulate protective equipment. a. HECC (Evaluates the needs and recommendations of amateur hockeygoverning bodies in relation to protective equipment and safety) b. ATSM International (Voluntary standards development organization consisting of members from the government, academia, consumers, and manufacturers) c. CSA (Develops standards to address the needs of business, industry, government, and consumers) d. NOCSAE (Commissions research directed toward injury reduction) e. PECC (Certifies eye guards) 3. Explain what must happen for a National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) seal to be applied to a helmet. The helmet needs to pass the drop test (football) and must be permanently and legibly marked with the manufactures name, model, and size. It must undergo a projectile impact test (baseball) and then will be passed by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOSCAE). The NOSCAE standard is not a warranty against injury and resulting liability, but most helmet manufacture’s provide a separate 3-5 year warranty on the helmet shell. 4. List three general indications for the use of thermoplastic materials in the care, prevention, and treatment of athletic injuries. a. Provides compression to reduce effusion and swelling when treating and rehabilitating injuries such as contusions b. Provides support and protection when treating and rehabilitating existing injuries such as chronic fractures, and myositis ossificans c. Used to provide support and protection when preventing injuries such as contusions, fractures, or repetitive and re-occurrent injuries
