As a ruler, Oedipus is arrogant, unperceptive, and downright mean to people around him. Assuming other characters are trying to steal his power, Oedipus doesn't listen to their wisdom. Questions About Power 1. How is Oedipus at the beginning of the play different from Oedipus the cursed man towards the end? At the beginning of the play, Oedipus is portrayed as a confident and respected king who is determined to solve the mystery of King Laius's murder and save Thebes. However, as the play progresses and Oedipus discovers the truth of his own identity and the prophecy he has fulfilled, he becomes a cursed and tragic figure. His power diminishes as he realizes the extent of his own unknowing actions and faces the consequences of his fate. 2. What gives a character power in this play? Power in the play is primarily derived from societal roles and positions, such as kingship, lineage, and authority. Oedipus holds power as the king of Thebes, while others like Creon wield influence through their familial connections and political standing. Additionally, knowledge and insight into the truth also confer power, as seen in the roles of the prophet Tiresias and the shepherd who reveals Oedipus's origins. 3. Who else has power in the play besides Oedipus and how? Besides Oedipus, other characters possess power in the play. Creon, as Oedipus's brother-in-law and trusted advisor, holds significant political influence, especially after Oedipus blinds himself and relinquishes the throne. Additionally, characters like Jocasta, as Oedipus's wife and queen, and Tiresias, as the prophetic seer, wield power through their relationships and knowledge. 4. Remember the Oedipus accuses Creon of plotting against him in order to get more power. Does Creon seem satisfied being the King's brother-in-law? Explain. Although Oedipus accuses Creon of plotting against him to seize power, Creon does not seem satisfied with merely being the king's brother-in-law. Creon displays ambition and strategic thinking throughout the play, suggesting that he may indeed desire more power and influence. However, his intentions remain ambiguous, and it is left up to interpretation whether Creon is content with his position or seeks further ascendancy.
