Argumentative Essay Thesis Statement and Rationale In “Zero Plastic”, the protagonist no longer loves his partner and constantly complains about her strange obsessions and hobbies. Her obsessions benefit his career, and he selfishly uses that to his advantage, but he creates a piece of art he refers to as ‘Trash Madonna’ which reflects how he truly feels about his partner and relationship as a whole. This thesis statement is arguable because there are two interpretations after reading this text. One interpretation is my argument, which is how the love the protagonist once felt for his partner has greatly decreased due to her obsessions and hobbies. To me, the man is sick of his partner’s lifestyle and only uses her obsessions to gain money and clients within his career. However, others may interpret this text in the opposite way. There is a way to see and understand that maybe the man is paying a strange tribute to his partner when he creates his piece called the ‘Trash Madonna’. He may still love his partner just the same, and even appreciate her more since he can benefit from her obsessions. Everyone has different ways of expressing their love, and his artwork and talk about her hobbies may be a strange way that he presents his love for her. Only after briefly skimming through the story, I already found four pieces of examples that I can use to help my argument. One quote says, “Her obsessions had been good for her career” (Blackwell 124). This quote, and the sentences following it, can be used to explain how he benefits from her obsessions, but that he does it in a selfish way. The text never mentions anyway he gives back to her or helps her with her hobbies and crafts around the home. He simply just takes credit from her for his own career. A second example is when the man refers to his new piece of artwork as ‘Trash Madonna’. The text explains this painting almost as if it is the man’s partner and labelling someone as a trash Madonna is never a positive thing. A third example that goes along with this second one is the quote, “Let her take away her thrift-store chic and leave him with a woman who needs no clothes at all, who requires no soap, who doesn’t even kill microorganisms because she doesn’t breathe air” (Blackwell 124). In this part of the text, the man is describing his new piece of art, the ‘Trash Madonna’. The way he describes it as not needing all the things his partner needs is a form of complaining in my eyes. He describes the painting as a simple woman who doesn’t require much, which leads the reader to think that his partner needs a lot of attention and things in life, which he does not like. He’d rather have someone who requires little in life and is a simple woman who makes him happy. This is also another example that tells me he can be selfish by wishing for a low maintenance partner. He seems to have expectations already set, and clearly his current partner does not uphold those expectations. The final example is the quote, “But he no longer cared” (Blackwell 124). This simple yet strong sentence tells me that man no longer cares about anything, including his relationship with his partner. He no longer cares what she thinks about anything from the materials he uses in the household, to his pieces of art. He seems to have just completely given up on their relationship, and comes off as a selfish and unhappy man.
