Katie is a 35 yr old wife, mother, daughter as well as an up in coming professional for an
unknown role, and in an unknown company. Her drug of choice is prescription pills used as
muscle relaxers (addiction classified as an either ingestive that is a chemical dependence that is
considered a mood altering chemical, the addiction is considered a biopsychosocial disease). There is no indication of a process addiction that Katie may have. Katie had began taking prescription pain medications, three years ago stemming from when she
suffered from a tragic car accident in her late 20s soon after being prescribed medication from
the incident, the medication made her feel above wonderful which is a mood altering substance
that is primarily used for a euphoric feelings that enhance productivity (1983, p. 38). Katie
began seeking pain pills from family, friends coworkers and eventually the internet. Katie soon
got admitted to a residential treatment center for four weeks the treatment appeared to be
beneficial from the program but she did not schedule any followups nor did she participate in any
AA meetings.
The impact of the addiction on Katie’s personal life ( marriage) , her parenting with two
children , her day to day in a professional setting as the sole provider in the household is overall
complicated and stressful.
The impact of Katie’s addiction on herself, family, society, and workplace is that she is
untrustworthy her family is deeply concerned for Katie’s health and how it is not acceptable for
the children and anyone around her. Her husband is worried, frustrated. With the stimuli

not respond positively to treatment of any form including going cold turkey at home with no
clinical support, knowledge or proper information for recovery. The case manager expressed that
Katie was in need of treatment for her addiction associated with pain medication, Katie has been
a no call no show. Due to past relapse it is an indication that Katie will in fact relapse with major
long term consequences.
