Cell Structure II: RER, Golgi, and Secretion Jaundice     Red blood cells are broken down in liver to bilirubin (yellow pigmented) When bilirubin isn’t properly degraded and removed, jaundice occurs Sx: yellowing of skin and eyes Common causes    Newborn babies with immature livers Alcohol abuse, infections, liver cancer, hepatitis Rx: light treatment to help eliminate bilirubin Jaundice Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON)  Mitochondria DNA inherited disorder  Maternal inheritance only- most common  Inherited form of vision loss; death of cells in optic nerve  Sx begin in teens or 20’s, mainly effects central vision  Rx?: maybe antioxidants; genetic testing Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON)
