Self Presentation & Interacting with Others - Three components of emotion & universal emotions: Emotions are felt by everyone, but how they are expressed and experienced are very different from person to person and according to psychology they are subjective experiences that accompanied by physiological, cognitive, and behavioral cognitives changes and reactions Cognitive reactions are mental assessments that can include appraisals of what is happening, expectations about a situation, and general faults about the experience Behavioral reactions are evident by different body language or facial expression (can be interpreted differently from culture to culture) Also, emotions are temporary, varies in intensity, can be positive/negative, and are involuntary There are a shit ton of emotions but there are 6 universal emotions that can be easily identified by individuals all around the world (consistent facial expressions across different cultures) These include happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger, and surprise Blind people who have never seen before express similar facial expressions to everyone else in response to different emotions Charles Darwin suggests that emotion is an adaptive quality and that it is therefore innate Extra Notes: Functionalism is based on the premise that all aspects of a society (institutions, roles, norms, etc.) serve a purpose and that all are indispensable for long-term survival of the society Cultural universal refers to a trait or pattern that is common to all cultures worldwide (i.e. marriage, language, art, dance, etc.) Diffusion is the spread of an invention or discovery from one place to another and often involves the spread of ideas across the globe Culture lag refers to the fact that culture takes time to catch up with technological innovations Values are shared judgements about what is right and what is wrong Culture shock is the feeling of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety that people experience when visiting, doing business in, or living in a society that is different from their own.
