Part A: In “The Premature Burial” there is a character who fears being buried alive. His fear is produced by having a similar condition to catalepsy. In “The Premature Burial” it states the ghastly Danger to which I was subjected haunted me day and night. When night covered the Earth, then, with every horror of thought, I shook—shook as the quivering plumes upon the hearse. When Nature could endure wakefulness no longer, it was with a struggle that I consented to sleep—for I shuddered to reflect that, upon awaking, I might find myself the tenant of a grave.” This fear of his practically controls him to the point where its hard to sleep at night. I believe that the theme is the power and control that fear can have. I believe that this is the theme because in another paragraph in “The premature Burial” it says “And now the Comforter fled forever, and a still sterner Despair overcame me; for I could not help perceiving the absence of the paddings which I had so carefully prepared—and then, too, there came suddenly to my nostrils the strong peculiar odor of moist earth. The conclusion was irresistible. I was not within the vault.” In this paragraph his fear made him believe that he was in a coffin and had him trying to scape from a coffin that was not there Part B: Even though not being on the same level of death, people fear social events or being noticed by a huge group of people. This fear consumes them I would say just as hard as this article to where the person does their most to avoid social situations involving speaking in front a group of people or a crowd like a class presentation. Part C: 1. Poe uses imagery to appeal to the five senses in the sentence ”The unendurable oppression of the lungs—the suffocating fumes from the damp earth—the clinging to the death garments—the rigid embrace of the narrow house—the blackness of the absolute Night— the silence like a sea that overwhelms”. He appeals to feel the pressure in our lunge, the feeling of suffocation, the sight of pitch blackness not being able to see a thing, and the silence not being able to hear a thing other than our breath. 2. You can tell if a catalepsy patient is still living by the redness in their cheek, the faint heartbeats, as well as you can feel that there is still warmth in their body. 3. the narrator uses “Just as the day dawns to the friendless and houseless beggar who roams the streets throughout the long desolate winter night—just so tardily—just so wearily—just so cheerily came back the light of the Soul to me.” This shows he’s happy and is doing ok. 4. the narrator was thought to awake but is having a hallucination that he is speaking to some sort of person after death possibly. I think this, because the person said I bid you to arise showing he is entitled, or thinks is entitled, to some sort of power or control over the narrator. 4. The narrator is shown the graveyard where he lied and showed other bodies that were all shrouded and sad 5. The mental state of the narrator is very poor and controlled by fear since he has multiple hallucinations and vivid memories of being in a coffin. 6. Poe described a problem, an idea and went into detail of his hauntings and answered it was his ever-prevalent idea and not as what exactly what it is. 7. The narrator is struggling in a coffin and was trying to cry for help but it was no use he then tries to move his arms noticing a wood substance was blocking and surrounding him, not more than six inches away from him. 8. The change of long to short and choppy gives the reader less information and having more time to think and wonder about the story. It made me feel hopeless since now the long sentences became short made me think he is giving up and letting into his fear since he is in a coffin. 9. while thinking he was trapped in a coffin he was still screaming and shaking in his coma. The people around him were asking him why he is screaming like that but not being able to see them the narrator was shook and woken up being able to see his surroundings. If I started hearing those noises while thinking I was inside a coffin, I would rejoice thinking someone heard my cries and was going to get me out of the coffin. 10. the similarities of the boat and his fears is being claustrophobic. The place he was sleeping in from top to bottom was tiny so he had to squeeze in, resembling to a coffin fit to his stature. 11. By having to endure his fears multiple times with each time dulling his fear making them less of a fear. With his fear gone and his catalepsy falling into the same fate shortly after he was able to go abroad and live life. 12. In the last lines Poe is saying we must face our fears or endure them enough to make them weaker or the opposite will happen to use and eventually making us be controlled by our fears not able to live life.
