Debate Question: Who should get to decide what and how history is taught in American schools? Debate Prep: Use information from this week’s readings and additional to List PROs & CONs for each Identified Group in the columns. The President/Congress They want the curriculum to reflect “citizenship, patriotism, essentials, and benefits of the free enterprise system, respect for authority, and respect for individual rights." Executive order eliminating systemic racism, white privilege, and other gender race topics to be in the curriculum (Donald Trump) Biden reversed this when he came into ofÏce Republicans tend to sanitize history and want to glorify America while liberals tend to criticize State Dept. of Education State Standards are confusing Local School Boards They are representing the students They need to be inclusive and clear Students either want to learn or need to learn but teachers are uncomfortable teaching these hard truths so if someone is advocating and forcing this at a community level it would be helpful They essentially assist the president is their policies Teachers They ultimately decide how the material is portrayed to students but that also can be biased and/or lead to students’ things everything is biased “Teachers must help students understand how privilege works at a systemic level that may have given students an edge that, while it may be one, they didn’t ask for, is still very real” but it is easy to teach white guilt as well or a savior complex "To feel comfortable, you need to have a really good classroom climate, where students feel that they're not being blamed for what happened in the American past, where they Parents They can advocate for their students It Is their child ad their tax money so they should have a say in what is taught don't feel shame about it. It is 100 percent not their fault that there is racism in this country. It will be their fault if they don't do anything about it in the next 20 years." They are held responsible for everything they say to students.
