Student-Taught Vocabulary Lesson I am an avid lover of learning vocabulary, and I wanted my students to be the same way. To make them excited about learning vocab, I wanted to be creative and fun with teaching vocabulary. Instead of presenting vocabulary in the boring, traditional way of saying aloud words and their meanings and giving a list of the words to have students memorize, I decided on a better plan. Instead of me, the teacher, teaching the vocabulary words, I put the responsibility of learning on the students in order to give them a challenge, and to present the words in different ways. To create this fun lesson on vocabulary, I made a handout of all the rules and guidelines the students were to follow. I had students choose a partner to work with, and had them pick out their own word using a dictionary. I had students clear their words with me to make sure it was not too easy, that it was a word they might run into often, and that it was appropriate. Once they did this, students had to come up with a fun, creative way to teach the word to the class so that the class would have a good way of remembering the word and its meaning. Students were exposed to 15 different words and 15 different ways of learning those words. A lot of the students presented information in ways I never would have thought of, and they loved the project. They were excited about their vocabulary words, and anxious to learn their classmates’ words. Students got to see information presented in a variety of ways, and learned through one another; not just through the teacher.
