Gabrielle Suchons La Contrainte

Gabrielle Suchon’s ‘La Contrainte’ Gabrielle Suchon wrote, under the pseudonym G. S. Aristophile, what is probably the first lengthy philosophical work on gender by a woman. Whilst pamphlets by women had previously appeared, most famously Marie de Gournay’s Egalité des hommes et des femmes (1622), Suchon’s work sets out to examine in detail the institutions of marriage and religious confinement and to build a case against them using authorities both religious and secular. Her 1693 Traité de la morale et de la politique is by no means original in its choice of subject: a large number of writings dedicated to ‘la condition féminine’ appeared in the 16th century and the trend continued in the 17th century (over 150 between 1600 & 1700). Whether because of the number of volumes on the subject or because of its controversial nature: ‘amis et adversaires de la femme vont bientôt chercher leurs arguments dans les textes sacrés, et les textes bibliques ou ceux des Pères de l’Eglise vont connaître des interprétations et des déformations allant jusqu’à la caricature’ (1). Whilst it is true that: ‘dans l’ensemble, les traités dont les titres témoignent d’une exaltation de la femme dépassent nettement le nombre de ceux où elle est dénigrée’(2), in particular when authors resort to the tried and tested method of recounting the deeds of various ‘femmes illustres’, it is important to recognize that this ‘glorification’ of women can also stem from a desire to control them. As pointed out by Joan Smith: Putting women on pedestals is one of those devious masculine devices whose meaning is exactly the opposite of what it appears to be. Far from constituting a celebration of female power - where this one woman is concerned at any rate - it is a way of denying it: the woman we have honoured in this way is good, which is to say that her behaviour falls within acceptable parameters, and therefore she does not pose a threat to us, we do not need to worry about her. (3) Thus the fact that some of the most ardent defenses of women come from church quarters may not seem entirely incongruous: Prenant le contre-pied de tout un courant d’hostilité, certains ecclésiastiques, […], [un] Grenaille, [un] du Bosc, [un] Le Moyne, se sont mis à faire l’éloge de la femme. En fait ils se livraient à un oiseux calcul qui consistait à la rendre aussi responsable que l’homme envers la société dans la mesure où elle devenait son égale. Et le Père Du Bosc d’avouer: ‘… je ne suis leur Panégyriste que pour être plus librement leur législateur’. (4) Regardless of the motives of her predecessors, Suchon comes at the end of a long line, to the extent that one critic was able to comment: ‘Ce n’est pas tant de lui-même que le discours de Gabrielle Suchon tire les preuves démonstratives de sa véracité que de sa conformité avec une tradition’ (5). Her treatise sums up many of the arguments on the subject of the inequalities between the sexes and, in an attempt to preempt any counter-arguments, does so in a style which is convoluted and, at times, repetitive and tedious. Laborious style, rehashed arguments, scholastic rhetoric: in a word, not a book which cries out to be picked up. But Suchon was a woman and has been described by some scholars as a forerunner of feminism in France. As we will see this is a problematic issue; the fact that she seems to encourage women to resist entering into either religious or marital vows should not blind the reader to the recommended outcome of this resistance: to live a contemplative and charitable life of worship. Suchon advocates that women should be free from the pressures and restrictions imposed upon them by men through the institutions of convent and marriage but this hypothetical freedom should be dedicated to serving God better. This concept is hard to reconcile with the assertion by modern feminists, such as Irigaray, that religion, and Christianity in particular, is a patriarchal plot to subdue women and deny them access to a spiritual dimension where they can recognize themselves as gendered beings. Those two seemingly conflicting aspects of Suchon’s work, the plea for greater freedom for women and the religious arguments and aims used to support it, will form the basis of this paper. Traité de la morale et de la politique is divided into three parts: La Liberté, la Science and l’Autorité. I will concentrate here on the ‘Deuxième section’ of La Liberté. Entitled ‘La Contrainte’, this section suggests that the lack of choice in lifestyle is ‘le plus redoutable de tous les maux’ and insists that this ‘contrainte’ is exercised most stringently on women, in particular in ‘l’enfermement domestique’ (marriage) and ‘la clôture religieuse’ (convent life). Whilst, as mentioned previously, the use of religious texts was a rather common tool to support biological or political arguments relating to the differences, or lack of them, between the sexes, Suchon’s work stands apart in that it denounces the oppression of women, not as a social issue but as a crime against God: she argues that we are predestined to serve God in the manner he has chosen for us, according to our temperament and natural inclinations. To force someone who has not been given a vocation to enter a closed order, or in fact marriage, therefore constitutes a flaunting of God’s will: ‘ Il n’appartient qu’à Dieu de choisir ses domestiques, et c’est très mal à propos qu’on prétend lui faire la loi’ (6). Suchon pursues a similar argument in a 1700 text, Du Célibat volontaire (7), where she advocates a new status for women, that of ‘Neutralistes’: a life free of matrimonial or religious ‘engagement’ but wholly devoted to God. This is in sharp contrast with previous texts which use religious arguments to demonstrate the worthiness of women with a view to making them equal partners to men in a social context, challenging for example the rightfulness of salic laws and defending the right for women to act as rulers. By way of example, Marie de Gournay, whom I mentioned previously, used scriptural references in an attempt to expose the superiority of men as a fallacy but her ultimate aim does not appear to be strictly religious. Rather, she concludes with an impressive rhetorical twist: Si l’on croyait que l’Ecriture … commandât [à la femme] de céder à l’homme, comme indigne de le contrecarrer, voyez l’absurdité qui suivrait: la femme se trouverait digne d’être faite à l’image du Créateur, de jouir de la très sainte Euchariste, des mystères de la Redemption, du Paradis, et de la vision, voire possession de Dieu, non pas des avantages et des privilèges de l’homme: serait-ce point déclarer l’homme plus précieux et plus haut que toutes ces choses, et partant commettre le plus grief des blasphèmes? (8) This closes her argument and having established the need for male domination to end, she does not provide women with any more guidance or suggest that the freedom thus acquired should be used strictly for worship. Whilst it is true that Suchon sees and denounces the pressures put on women in both convent and married life as odious, her entire argument revolves around a rather Jansenistic view of predestination and the necessity for the individual not to achieve personal freedom, but to fulfil God’s plans. She argues that whilst the institution of closed orders is divinely created and will lead to salvation for those endowed with vocation, it is wholly reprehensible to enter into such an order for the wrong reasons: Les vocations les plus parfaites peuvent être mauvaises pour ceux qui n’y sont pas destinés par Dieu ou qui n’en font pas un bon usage, changeant par leurs abus la médecine en poison. (9) This could be seen as a highly controversial statement in a society where convents were often used either as a ‘safe’ destination for girls who were, for one reason or another, an embarrassment to their families, or as a dumping ground for girls whose parents could not afford a dowry. Suchon strongly attacks this practice: Ce n’est pas aux parents, non plus qu’à toute autre personne, d’immoler des victimes innocentes comme bon leur semble, soit pour la décharge de leur famille, soit pour satisfaire leur ambition, soit pour contenter leur avarice, soit pour assouvir leur vengeance.(10) In her eyes this is not only a crime against the physical person, but more importantly a sure way to damnation: being unaware of the dedication expected and lacking a true understanding of God’s will, a young woman’s presence in the convent will be in itself sinful. Furthermore, what constitutes a menial sin in profane circles becomes a mortal one for those who have taken vows. Thus the unfortunate woman will precipitate her downfall more surely within consecrated walls than she would have done in the secular world. Suchon does, however, lay the blame firmly at the feet of parents since the girls, most often teenagers, are still too young to comprehend what is being asked of them: C’est une chose étonnante que la dureté de ces cruels parents qui immolent souvent leurs enfants mal à propos et, par un zèle indiscret ou malveillant, les obligent à des choses qui surpassent leurs capacités et qui seront cause de leur perte. (11) The notion that one could enter the convent to redeem oneself or to avoid worldly temptation is dismissed: Dieu ne veut point de ces victimes entachées de vices et de péchés énormes, mais […] il réprouve celles dont le tempérament trop fort ou trop faible pourrait, dans la suite du temps, causer de fâcheuses révoltes ou dégénérer de la perfection de cet état, à cause de leur incapacité naturelle qui est souvent presque sans remède, si elle n’est surmontée par une grâce toute-puissante et victorieuse.(12) Therefore those willing to take vows should be challenged rather than encouraged and large numbers of women taking vows should by no means be seen as indicative of a society’s piety: Le Cloître demande des âmes divines, ou pour mieux dire divinisées par les continuelles approches qu’elles doivent avoir avec Dieu afin de ne pas encourir ce reproche du prophète Osée: ‘Ephraïm a multiplié ses autels pour augmenter ses offenses’. (13) To avoid this she recommends that women should not be allowed to enter a convent until they are quite advanced in years, citing St. Paul, and popes Pious the First and St. Leo as precursors of the idea. However, the caveat included in that chapter shows that Suchon was aware that her position was potentially dangerous. At a time when religion and politics were so closely linked, as clearly demonstrated by the repeated attacks by Louis XIV's government on Protestants and Jansenists, to denounce the abuses suffered by women in institutions created by the church would have been controversial and could, to an extent, have been perceived as an attack on the monarch himself, as head of the church. The political implications of Suchon’s writing and her awareness of it are made clear by a rather sycophantic addition to her argument regarding the age at which women should be allowed to take vows. After citing the first-century and the seventh-century popes to support her argument, she adds: Pour en venir à notre temps, Louis Quatorze, roi de France très chrétien qui règne à présent, fit en son conseil une ordonnance selon laquelle on ne recevrait point de Religieuses en tout son royaume avant l’âge de vingt-cinq ans, loi très juste et très nécessaire pour le salut des âmes. Ce grand et puissant monarque a fait voir son admirable conduite en cette occasion, aussi bien que toutes les autres de sa vie, pour le bien de l’Etat et de la Religion, et nous pouvons dire avec vérité que Dieu a donné ses jugements et sa justice au roi, qu’il a jugé son peuple équitablement et que son trône sera établi à perpétuité parce qu’il a fait justice aux petits. Il est vrai que cette ordonnance n’a pas été mise à exécution, sa Majesté très chrétienne ayant jugé à propos d’en user ainsi pour quelque raison d’Etat, et pour ne point porter atteinte à la discipline présente de l’Eglise qui permet les professions solennelles à l’âge de seize ans – ce souverain monarque étant aussi pieux que sage, et aussi zélé pour la perfection évangélique que vigilant pour les intérêts de son royaume. (14) Regardless of the age at which vows are taken, she insists on the need for divine intervention in the choice of vocation, with a distinction reminiscent of the Jansenist notions of sufficient and efficacious grace: Il faut remarquer qu’outre le secours naturel que nous recevons de la grâce justifiante, qui nous est conférée au baptême, nous avons encore besoin d’un secours spécial et particulier qui nous assiste et nous fortifie pour bien vivre dans la vocation où nous sommes appelés. Je dis: appelés par Dieu, et non pas introduits par les créatures […]. (15) She also attacks the idea that women should be confined in order to remain chaste. Again she makes a distinction, this time between real and apparent purity, concluding that the chastity of those who are confined and therefore physically unable to sin is of little value if it is not accompanied by ‘real’, in other words moral, purity: […] ce qui nous apparaît des pratiques du Cloître, ce ne sont que les choses extérieures qui n’en forment que le corps. Nous pouvons dire que ce corps est sans âme s’il n’est animé par les inspirations et les grâces célestes, et favorisé par les bienfaits et la miséricorde de Dieu. (16) She concludes that to expect God to be satisfied with the superficial demonstrations of faith performed by unwilling or misguided members of closed orders is nothing short of blasphemous: ‘on fait injure à l’époux des Vierges en soutenant que les filles qu’on lui destine pour être ses épouses doivent être enfermées dans des murailles et des grilles pour être chastes et pures’ (17). More interestingly perhaps she takes the opportunity to turn the tables on the accusers, suggesting that the practice of confining women is first and foremost proof of the libidinous nature of most men and of their inability to exercise control over their desires. She quotes St Jerome: "Ils font bien connaître quelle est leur manière de vivre par la mauvaise opinion qu’ils ont de celle des autres" and concludes: Sans offenser personne, nous pouvons en dire autant de ceux qui se persuadent que la chasteté des filles est bien douteuse si elles ne sont enfermées […] ces mêmes hommes font connaître leur corruption par l’injustice de leurs mauvais sentiments. (18) She had earlier given a rather more explanatory version of this: Parce que plusieurs ont des corps et des âmes qui prennent feu comme le soufre aux approches des moindres étincelles, ils croient que personne ne saurait vivre sans brûler, si l’on n’a pas le moyen de se satisfaire pour éteindre ses flammes. De sorte qu’ils préviennent par une criminelle anticipation des péchés énormes à quoi celles du Sexe n’ont jamais pensé. (19) Her ultimate argument, however, remains that because ‘les lois tendent toujours à l’abaissement des femmes’ (20), women are unable to escape ‘la contrainte’. Since they have no freedom of choice or movement, they are unable to fulfil God’s plans even when they are aware of their own vocation or, perhaps more importantly, lack thereof: Que la contrainte est dangereuse, on peut facilement le connaître en ce qu’elle est contraire aux sentiments de la nature, opposée aux lumières de la raison et rebelle aux mouvements de la grâce. (21) Despite her meticulous argumentation against religious confinement, some critics find Suchon unconvincing as a defender of women’s rights, both in form and content. On Le Traité, Paul Hoffmann comments: Sa méthode est celle de la scholastique; sa thèse se développe dans l’abstrait, selon une logique toute formelle et qui ne s’ouvre pas sur la vie. (22) Hoffmann insists that even if the ideas developed in Le Traité were applicable, they would not necessarily be beneficial to women: Paradoxalement, la démarche de Gabrielle Suchon vise à renforcer la sujétion de la femme, l’exhortant à témoigner précisément de ces qualités de docilité, de douceur, de piété, que le monde exige d’elle. (23) Even though the stated aim of her plea for freedom is a life of worship according to God’s will, Suchon does take the opportunity to expose the unfairness of secular laws: Le droit, qui est à la vérité pour ceux du premier sexe, dégénère ordinairement dans un très grand abus par l’exercice d’une rigueur qui ne permet aucune défense aux femmes que celle de souffrir patiemment. (24) It is clear that whilst she acknowledges that ‘patient suffering’ is the only option offered to women, she does not suggest that this is a desirable, or even acceptable, state of affairs: ‘La seule consolation qu’on donne aux femmes est celle qui est commune à tous les misérables: qu’il faut avoir de la patience’ (25). Unlike Hoffmann, Pierre Ronzeaud sees this as evidence that Suchon’s writing aims first and foremost to denounce the injustice of ‘la condition féminine’: ‘elle n’a rien d’un prosélyte de l’immobilisme et […] si l’acte d’écrire a un sens à ses yeux, c’est bien d’ouvrir les yeux des autres, de donner à voir l’injustice et non d’enseigner la soumission’ (26). Indeed, he goes as far as suggesting that the religious context hides a far more revolutionary subtext: ‘il s’agit, pour la femme, de revendiquer son identité en tant que femme, de s’affirmer autre que l’homme et de s’assumer comme telle’ (27). It is, of course, impossible to assert Suchon’s intentions but if, as mentioned earlier, we accept that the ecclesiastics defended women in order to rule them more effectively, it is perhaps possible to see in Suchon’s writings an attempt to use religious rhetoric to achieve greater personal freedom via the only means available. Whilst the alternative to marriage and convent being offered may seem academic and unrealistic, and in any case reserved for women in possession of independent means, it does give her an opportunity to highlight the treatment suffered by women in a society in which they have no autonomy. Although the pious nature of her argument may seem to distract from her attacks on male abuses of power, it is nevertheless acknowledged that, in the case of Suchon as of others, ‘ce féminisme religieux sera utile à la cause des femmes’ (28). Form and content may be at odds but as pointed out by Ronzeaud: Cet ouvrage a deux faces: l’une décevante, où, par une laborieuse compilation […] l’auteur essaye de prouver les aptitudes féminines à l’exercice du gouvernement par l’identité de capacité des hommes et des femmes; l’autre, passionnante, où il dresse un terrible constat de l’injustice ressentie, en tant que dominée, par une femme qui refuse la dépendance, où magistrats, législateurs, politiciens et opinion publique veulent la confiner. (29) This in itself is enough to set her work apart from the glut of adulatory writings of the time, which eulogise women but remain silent on the potential suffering to which they are exposed and offer little in the way of social reform.
