Week 4 Notes (Pg 66-80)
Geopolitics of Outer Space
Orbital Space
● Orbital space is the Earth and how the planets revolve in outer space (i
think)
● Orbital debris refers to the material circulating in Earth’s orbits.
Public space
● Earth’s orbits are a “vertical public space,” (Parks 2013), which by treaty
belong to all humankind.
● They mark a global environment that begins in the disputed zone above
where sovereign airspace ends and outer space begins
Global Commons
● Many of the issues at play in the geopolitics of orbital space are tied to the
fact that orbital space is a global commons
● A global commons is a resource, in theory that is available to all… like air
Cultural Particularism
● The focus on individual locations and
their unique cultural identities
○ Ex. day of the dead in mexico,
oktoberfest in germany, ramadan
to muslims
● It’s a focus on individual locations and
their unique cultural identities.
● Cultural particularism emphasizes the
unique qualities and characteristics of
individual cultures without trying to
generalize or fit them into a universal framework. GGR111 Class Notes
Cultural Hybridization
● The blending and mixing of cultures due to an increase in
globalization?
● A blend of 2 or more cultures and their traits
○ Ex. Christmas in Western countries is mixed with
Western values (ex. Santa) and Christmas values
(ex. Christ)
Cultural Homogenization
● The idea that all cultures are
merging into one global culture
● Integration of cultures into one
big culture
● A big mush or cultures around
the world
Cultural Dimensions of Globalization
● the themes generally overlap with the sub-field of social geography
Westernization:
McDonaldization:
Westernization refers to the adoption of McDonaldization, on the other hand, is a
Western cultural, social, and economic
concept coined by sociologist George
practices by societies around the world. Ritzer to describe the process by which
societies adopt the characteristics
of fast-food restaurant chains,
particularly exemplified by McDonald's. GGR111 Class Notes
Questions
● The negative impact of not allowing people who are certified to practice their
trade in the west without having to start over.
● Western medicine dominates over more traditional forms of healthcare;
worrisome due to losing some more specific or wholistic knowledge
■ Since there's so much debris and most of the travel is done by
private entities or powerful countries power restricts access to
space in general in addition to the use of its space for
technology and the like GGR111 Class Notes
■ Countries that are economically powerful and stable have more
dominance and ownership of objects in the orbital space
because satellite projects take resources and funding; less
powerful countries don’t have that privilege
■ Countries with strong economic power can afford to put their
satellites into that geostationary orbit. Almost dominating that
area. Thus flexing their powers.

They are being surveilled.

Countries like Russia… America is watching from geostationary orbit
Earthquake and disaster management
● They see us moving towards a shared cosmopolitan culture
● I think they would be proponents of it, as they strive for a more unified
culture under a global market. Allowing for the market to control global media
seems to fit their opinions
● May increase manufacturing
● Perhaps the hyperglobalists view this as good! Let the powerful and able
global media channels that have the ability to reach the masses do that!
● They might argue that these large corporations, driven by profit motives, are
responding to the demands of a global audience. In their view, the global
media landscape reflects the efficiency and effectiveness of a market-driven
system, where powerful corporations dominate due to their ability to reach
and cater to a massive, international audience.
