First Aesthetic Field: Light  Light is paramount to aesthetics of movies and tv  Key element of visual perception; orients space and time  Lighting o Deliberate control of light and shadows  Manipulate and articulate perception of enviro o Outer enviro (space/time) o Inner enviro (emotional)  Shadows o Used to intensify or clarify an event o Types:  Attached  Fixed to an object; cant be removed  Reveals basic form, shape, texture  Cast  Apart of the object but fall on something else  Locate an object relative to surroundings  Object connected or disconnected o Connected: outside when standing and shadow is stuck to your feet o Disconnected: when you jump and shadow is on the floor but not touching you  Fallof o Brightness contrast between lighted side and the attached object o High contrast fallof FAST; intense shadows o Low contrast fallof SLOW; soft shadows o Controlling fallof  Use highly directional or difused lighting  Manipulating amount of fill light  More fill light  more transparent attached shadow; less contrast  Outer Orientations o Space: Cast shadows indicate where object is o Texture(tactile): Fallof appealing to sense of touch o Time: lighting determines time (golden hour; 5pm), season, day/night  Inner orientation o Establishes mood, atmosphere  High-key lighting: Bright light, slow fallof  Upbeat, normalcy; sitcoms  Low-key lighting: fast fallof, most of background is dark  Romance, horror; criminal minds  Above Eye level: Normal lighting illuminating subject  Below Eye level: Reverse attached shadow translating to suspicion and fear; also known as horror lighting  Predictive lighting: foreshadows o bright scene becoming dark; seeing a dark figure in background then lights turn of  Dramatic agent: aesthetic intensifier o Showing light source in scene; police lights, search lights
