Otosclerosis: Hardening of the middle ear (MIS) leading to decreased vibrations, resulting in conductive hearing loss (CHL). Etiology: Idiopathic (unknown cause), with a probable genetic/hereditary component. Prevalence: Common in women, especially after the age of 60. Symptoms: Conductive hearing loss: Increased sensitivity to high-pitched sounds (use male voice) Tinnitus: Ringing in the ears, CN VIII irritation Diagnosis: Audiometry: To assess hearing loss Weber test: Lateralization to the affected ear indicates CHL Rinne test: Bone conduction greater than air conduction indicates CHL Management: Surgery: Stapedectomy (removal of stapes) with a stainless steel prosthesis (Robinson's) Hearing aid: For louder sound amplification
