Translating the APTA Neck Pain CPG into Practice: A learning health systems data driven outcomes BACKGROUND RESULTS The Learning Health System model was proposed by the National Academy of Medicine with the goal of improving the quality of health care, reducing overall care costs, and improving the value of care delivery. Providing guideline adherent treatment has been demonstrated to improve health care quality and clinical outcomes. However, less than half of practicing physical therapist report delivering guideline adherent treatment. Lack of implementation of best care processes or “failure of care delivery” demonstrates increased health care spending and decreased quality of care. RESEARCH QUESTION Does implementation of the APTA Neck Pain Clinical Practice Guidelines within a large health system improve outcomes? (P2D) 62% Average Percent success METHODS Booster 63% 60% 60% • The percent of patients(n=704) meeting the MCID of the NDI pre-ed was 55% (95%[CI] = 51.6%-58.9%) compared to 63% (95% CI= 58.3-65.9%) post-education(n=625) with p < 0.05. • The greatest average per patient change on the NDI occurred during the first 6 months (+11.1%). • The greatest average percent of patients meeting the MCID of the NDI occurred during the first 6 months (60%). • Over 24 months, the average percent of patients meeting the MCID of the NDI increased by 8% (55% to 63%). CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest system wide clinical education and integration of an educational booster session has the potential to create sustainable practice changes, delivery of guideline adherent care and improve clinical outcomes.
