Other Physical Senses: Kinesthetic and Vestibular • Kinesthesis - knowing the position of the various parts of the body – Messages are sent to cerebellum • Vestibular - equilibrium/balance – Fluid in semicircular canals (inner ear) moves when you move, triggering hair cells, which send messages to the cerebellum. Dizziness is caused by ﬂuid that is still moving even though we aren’t. 108 Sensory Interaction • One sense may inﬂuence another • Smell inﬂuences taste – (smell + texture + taste = ﬂavor) • Vision inﬂuences hearing – McGurk effect (hear one syllable but see another, can perceive a third!) • Synaesthesia – Rare condition when the stimulus of one sense excites the neurons of another sense – A sound will make a person see a color or a sight will make a person taste 109
