Fatty Legs Character Essay
In Fatty Legs is the story about the residential school that uses harsh methods and
server punishments for indigenous children to make them forget about their culture. In this
story Olemaun is the main character who starts going to the residential school. Even though she
is still young child, she has a strong will and decided to go to the residential school to be able to
read and write English. Before she started to go to the school she shows how she is a persistent
person when she was trying to persuade her parents, but while she is in the school, she can be
stubborn and immature as she tries to get revenge when teachers and others children did
something bad to her.
She is a persistent person. For example, if her father didn’t tell her any wonderful things
he could learn at the school also he did want to let her go there, however, she still would like to
go to the school to learn to read. it said “My heart would not give up hope.” (p8) And she said “I
was not about to let another minute stand between men and my chance to learn” (P40) it
shows how important it is for her. In addition, “I started with the simple readers we were given,
tracking my finger over the words again and again, trying to sound them out and decipher what
they meant” (p52-53) it shows even though she is still not able to understand, she tried over
and over again.
She is immature, when Katherine and the other Gwich’in girls commended to make
Olemaun to work and she said “If I had a pocket of stones, I would shoot you with a storm of
pebbles”, and when Katherine turned and pointed at Olemaun, she said “Fatty Legs” Olemaun
called back them “Fatty Face” (p68) if it was adults they don’t do that so, it is childish she needs
to always have a comeback. Also, after she burned her stockings she was wearing another one
and it said “I strutted my sleek new legs past her desk.” She might know if nuns saw that she is
going to be mad at her, however she did it on her purpose.
Olemaun is stubborn. When she joined the school, children were given stockings from
the nuns and they should wear them. However, Margaret doesn’t like it and she prefers the
stockings that her mom bought for her. She has to take responsibility for wanting to go to the
school, then she has to follow their rules even they are tough. In addition, one more thing that
she didn’t follow nuns were when she stood in front of the microphone. She had to say things
that was already prepared but she didn’t say at all. “And if you do not say what you are told to,
we will cut the transmission,” The Raven informed me. (p64)
In conclusion, Margaret is an unrelenting, infantile and obstinate person. Because she
has strong wills and tries to do her best, however when she faced things that are difficult to go
through, she would be immature and stubborn. In the end of the story, she experienced many
things and grew up then she got back to her family all together.
