Biology 12 Diffusion in Agar Cubes 1. In terms of maximizing diffusion, what was the most effective size cube that you tested? The most effective size for maximizing diffusion was the 1 cm cube. The cube in the end was 100% diffused. 2. Why was that size most effective at maximizing diffusion? What are the important factors that affect how materials diffuse cells or tissues? The cubes we used represented cells. When there is a bigger difference in the ratio between surface area and volume, the slower the diffusion occurs. Therefore, the more surface area there is and the less volume that is presents, allows for the membrane to let materials diffuse in and out of the cell at a more efficient rate. 3. If a large surface area is helpful to cells, why do cells not grow to be very large? Although surface area is important and helps make diffusion happen more quickly; if a cell is too big their volume increase would be very different from the surface area. When a cell becomes too large it has to divide into two cells. This will make the SAVratio higher. 4. You have three cubes, A, B, and C. They have surface to volume ratios of 3:1, 5:2, and 4:1 respectively. Which of these cubes is going to be the most effective at maximizing diffusion, how do you know this? Cube C has the highest SAVratio. Which makes it the effective as it will most definitely lead to 100% diffusion. 5. How does your body adapt surface areato-volume ratios to help exchange gases? Humans are multicellular organisms. The cells in our body have to ability to split into cells to produce a higher SAVratio. This allows us to have a good gas exchange rate; however, if our surface area goes down, so does our rate of gas exchange. Biology 12 6. Why can’t certain cells, like bacteria, get to be the size of a small fish? Bacteria is a unicellular organism the organism is made up of one cell this means their size is limited. While, a small fish is multicellular, which means they are built of more than one cell. Their cells have the ability to divide into two and allow them to have a more efficient diffusion. 7. What are the advantages of large organisms being multicellular? A multicellular organism would be a plant and/or animal. These organisms don’t have any size restriction therefore, they can grow way bigger than a unicellular organism. They can have longer lifespans as they can continue living when individual cells die. Multicellularity also permits increasing complexity by allowing differentiation of cell types within one organism.
