Insight Theory of Learning Introduction The Insight Theory of Learning was proposed by Wolfgang Köhler, a German psychologist and one of the key figures in the Gestalt school of psychology. He conducted experiments with chimpanzees and found that learning often occurs through a sudden realization or "insight" rather than trial-and-error. Definition Insight learning is a type of learning or problem-solving that happens suddenly, through understanding the relationships between different parts of a problem, rather than through rote repetition or conditioning. Historical Background    Developed in the 1920s by Wolfgang Köhler. Famous experiments on chimpanzees, especially the chimp named Sultan. Köhler rejected the behaviorist view (e.g., Thorndike’s trial and error) and emphasized cognitive processes. Key Concepts Term Explanation A psychological approach that emphasizes holistic processing. "The whole Gestalt Psychology is greater than the sum of its parts." Insight The sudden realization of a problem’s solution. Perceptual Understanding occurs by reorganizing perceptions to find new patterns or Organization relationships. Köhler’s Experiment (Sultan the Chimpanzee)     Setup: A banana was placed out of reach. Sticks or boxes were placed within the enclosure. Observation: Sultan initially tried to reach the banana directly but failed. Insight Moment: Suddenly, he joined two sticks to make a longer one and reached the banana. Conclusion: Sultan did not solve the problem through trial and error but via a sudden insight. Characteristics of Insight Learning 1. Suddenness – Solution appears suddenly, not gradually. 2. Understanding Relationships – Learner perceives the relationships between parts of the problem. 3. Reorganization – Mental restructuring leads to problem-solving. 4. No Repetition Needed – Once insight is gained, the solution is remembered easily. 5. Transferable – The learned insight can be applied to similar problems.
