BODY-RELATED PRIDE AND ANTICIPATED EMOTIONS IN SPORT AND EXERCISE Body-Related Pride  Definition: Body-related pride is a positive self-conscious emotion that individuals can feel about their fitness or appearance.  Forms of Pride: Pride can be related to body-related appearance or function and can also be experienced as a state or disposition.  Hubristic and Authentic Pride: There are hubristic and authentic facets of pride. Hubristic pride arises from perceptions of superiority through downward comparisons, while authentic pride is derived from satisfaction and achievement through one's own effort.  Attributions and Pride: The attributions individuals make about their bodyrelated characteristics influence the type of pride they experience. Hubristic pride is associated with attributions that are relatively uncontrollable and stable over time, while authentic pride is linked to attributions of effort and hard work.  Congruence and Pride: Greater congruence between individuals' actual and ideal self-perceptions of fitness, function, weight, muscularity, and thinness contributes to feelings of body-related pride.  Impact on Behavior: Pride is associated with favorable health-related behaviors, including higher levels of physical activity and positive sport experiences. Pride about fitness and function appears to be a stronger predictor of physical activity than pride about appearance. Anticipated Emotions  Anticipated Emotions: Anticipated emotions refer to the emotions individuals expect to experience in the future.  Limited Research on Anticipated Emotions: There is limited research on anticipated emotions in the context of body-related self-conscious emotions. Most studies have focused on negative anticipated emotions, such as shame and guilt, in relation to eating disorders.  Motivational Aspect: Anticipated emotions, both positive (e.g., pride) and negative (e.g., shame), can serve as motivators or discouragers for exercise and sport participation.  Behavioral Outcomes: Anticipated emotions, particularly positive ones like pride, can influence intentions to engage in physical activity and may mediate the relationship between anticipated emotions and actual behavior. Conclusion:  Body-related pride is a positive self-conscious emotion that can be related to appearance and function.  Hubristic and authentic facets of pride are influenced by individuals' attributions.  Congruence between actual and ideal self-perceptions contributes to feelings of body-related pride.  Pride is associated with favorable health-related behaviors and can influence physical activity and sport experiences.  Anticipated emotions, both positive and negative, can play a role in motivating or discouraging exercise and sport participation. Understanding the distinctions between experienced and anticipated emotions is valuable in the context of sport and exercise.
