MOTIVATIONAL CLIMATE, LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE, AND ROLE AMBIGUITY 1. Motivational Climate  Rooted in achievement goal theory, it distinguishes between task orientation (self-referenced) and ego orientation (externally focused).  Motivational climate in groups influenced by both peers and leaders, especially the coach.  Impacts on athletes include self-esteem, moral understanding, and social support.  Task-oriented climate associated with positive outcomes, while egooriented climate linked to negative effects.  Introduction to the empowering climate concept. 2. Empowering Climate  Combines elements of self-determination theory with motivational climate.  Focuses on autonomy support, social support, and structure.  Associated with positive outcomes such as satisfaction, reduced dropouts, and improved performance.  Interventions like the TARGET model promote an empowering climate. 3. Leadership Structure Within the Team  Leadership extends beyond coaches to informal leaders within the team.  Different types of informal leaders: task-oriented, motivational, social, and external.  Informal leaders contribute to team efficacy and performance.  Positive correlation between informal leadership and individual/team performance. 4. Role Ambiguity  Role ambiguity refers to uncertainty about one's responsibilities within a team.  Four areas to consider: scope of responsibility, behavioral patterns, role performance evaluation, consequences of failure.  Role ambiguity negatively affects individual and group performance.  Role perceptions and behaviors are crucial for group processes, emergent states, and team performance.
