The rough-skinned newt has an unusual adaptation; specifically, it is this: their skin has glands that produce powerful neurotoxin which can paralyze their victims. 2. The only real predator of the rough-skinned newt is: Toxin resistant garden snakes 3. There is a positive and negative outcome for the newt’s main predator when it eats the rough-skinned newt. a. The positive outcome for that predator is: They can feed on the most poisonous creatures while other predators can’t due to developing resistance to the toxin produced by rough-skinned newt. b. The negative outcome for that predator is: By eating the rough-skinned newt, their body becomes slower. Even though garden snakes can survive they become slower in metabolic activities. This can make them vulnerable to their predators. 4. This was the specific discovery that gave humans an advantage over bacteria: Antibiotics 5. The important events that led to the evolution of antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis (TB) in Russian prisoners were: The prisoner had TB had medicne but when he was released he stopped taking the medicines. There was some bacteria in his body that was strong to fight the medicine and thus developed resistance against the medicine so he got TB once again. 6. Explain why the multi-drug resistance of bacteria is a man-made problem: Humans have been putting antibiotics in aniamal food, in hospitals, basically everywhere. The antibiotics are turning the microbes into more drug restance and making it harder to treat the disease. 7. The pest that invades the fungus gardens that the Atta leaf-cutter ants maintain is: tangled matson bacteria (not sure how to spell it as CC is saying it as matson) 8. Explain why the fungus gardens do not develop a resistance to the bacterial antibiotic: It doesn’t develop resistance due to fungus protecting from pests and molds. 9. In the study of asthma rates of children living in the Bavarian countryside, the factor that seemed to lower the rates the most was: They spend way more time near livestock 10. Explain what you found most interesting or learned about from this film—especially how it affected what you have learned about selection pressures, evolution, and pathogens: One thing I found interesting is how kids on a farm have evolved to be more healthier than kids living in the city.
