Prelab 9: Spine, Abdomen, and Thorax Answer the participation activity questions below prior to attending lab. Refer to Chapter 12 in Orthopedic Taping, Wrapping, Bracing, and Padding to describe the purpose and materials associated with the techniques listed below Wrapping 1. Compression Wrap Purpose: Controls mild, moderate, or severe swelling when treating thorax, abdomen, and spine contusions, strains, and fractures Material: 6-inch width by 5-yard length or 4-inch or 6-inch width by 10-yard length elastic wrap determined by the size of the individual, metal clips, 2-inch or 3-inch elastic tape, taping scissors Bracing 1. Rib Belts Purpose: Provides compression and mild support to the thorax following injury. These braces can be used to treat rib contusions and fracture, intercoastal strains and costochondral injury 2. Lumbar Sacral Purpose: Prevents and treats lumbar sprains, rectus abdominis and lumbar strains, spondylolysis, and spondylolisthesis. Provides compression and moderate support, lessens the ROM, and corrects structural abnormalities 3. Cervical Collar Purpose: Provides support and immobilization, and lessens the ROM when preventing and treating sprains, acute torticollis, stable fractures, disk herniation of the cervical spine, and brachial plexus injury Utilize Chapter 25 in Principles of Athletic Training: A Competency-Based Approach to Evidence-Based Clinical Practice to summarize the recommendations for prevention of cervical and lumbar spine injuries. 1. Cervical: Ways to prevent cervical spine injuries are to do muscle strengthening, having full range of motion, using correct techniques and using correct techniques. 2. Lumbar: Ways to prevent lumbar spine injuries are to avoid stress, correct biomechanical abnormalities and core stabilization.
