We need to talk about an injustice General Notes: ● Identity is really important to make an impact. ● Being passionate about your identity is also significant. ● Doing the right thing is sometimes the hard thing, but could make the bigger influence. ● Restricting yourself from doing certain things that seem harmless can sometimes build your identity. ● Mass Incarceration in America, especially with people of color. ● 1 out of 3 black men with the ages of 18-36 are in jail or prison. ● Poverty is also correlated with imprisonment. ● Our justice system tends to favor the rich. ● 34% of the black male population have permanently lost their right to vote. ● The U.S. is the only country in the world that has sentenced 13 year olds to die in prison. ● For every 9 people who have been executed, 1 are innocent. ● Our country has a dynamic where we like to ignore the past, or try to avoid conversations about race. ● Germany believes death sentences are immoral, especially because of their history, yet America does it. ● Stevenson believes our country’s identity is at risk. ● Our identity is shadowed by suffering, injustice, etc. ● This identity is challenging to talk about. ● Listening to this identity is important though, and many things can be created from listening. ● The opposite of poverty is justice. ● Defend a young black boy as if he was an older white male entrepreneur. 5 Take-Aways: 1. Identity and being passionate about Identity is significant for making an impact. 2. The injustice system in America is unfavorable towards poc and poverty. 3. If Germany had an execution system, we would react with shock, yet the west has death row and has even sentenced 13 year olds to death. 4. Identity can be shadowed by all the bad, ignored factors. 5. We cannot be fully evolved human beings until we care about human rights and basic dignity. How can each of your take-aways be made into a claim (if it’s not already a claim)? Identify which type of claim they are: claim of fact, value, or policy? 1. Being passionate about identity is required in order to make the impact you want to see in the world. (Value) 2. The injustice system should be changed as it favors the wealthy, white people. (Value) 3. America’s execution policy should change, because if Germany had it in this modern age, people would react hysterically. (Policy) 4. Identity always has a shadow that is attached to it by the tail, and America’s shadow is human inequality, the justice system, and racial issues. (Fact) 5. In order for humans to fully evolve and reach our potential, we need to care about humans rights and basic dignity first. (Value)
