Elongation Process of Mitochondrial CoA It involves the sequence of 4 small units, which adds 2 carbon units. The condensation process takes place when all the sections are still attached with the ACP molecule. Methyl and acetyl CoA condense to give a 4-carbon compound, acetoacetyl ACP with a release of a molecule of CO2. Decarboxylation signifies the presence of CO2. Elongation Process of Mitochondrial CoA Step 1: β-keto acyl ACP synthase catalyzes the condensation of malonyl ACP and β-keto acyl ACP. Step 2: β-keto acyl ACP reductase catalyzes the reduction of β-keto acyl ACP. NADPH + H+ → NADP+ Step 3: β-hydroxy acyl ACP dehydrase catalyzes the dehydration of β-hydroxy acyl ACP with the release of H2O. Step 4: β-enoyl ACP reductase catalyzes the reduction of enoyl ACP. NADPH + H+ → NADP+ This completes the cycle of section of a 4-carbon compound (crotonyl ACP) which is still attached to ACP. Continuation of binding of more malonyl CoA & elongation process. Continuation of the Elongation Process of Mitochondrial CoA The 16-carbon fatty acid (palmitic acid) is formed, which is still attached to ACP. Release of Palmitic Acid Palmitoyl thioesterase (thioesterase) cleaves palmitic acid from ACP. Palmitoyl-ACP + H₂O → Palmitic acid + ACP Enzyme: Thioesterase
