Signs and Symptoms of Burns Pain Redness Swelling Skin is pale or cold Blistered skin Damaged skin First Aid for Burns Do not break blistered skin Do not apply lotions of any kind If possible, cool the area with running water Cover with sterile dressing Immobilize the affected area Treat for shock if major case Shift to hospital, do not give the victim anesthesia because anesthesia is required If minor case, give the victim pain killers Burns Complete burns: epidermis and dermis are destroyed. Incomplete burns: epidermis is affected. First-degree burns: red, painful, and dry. Second-degree burns: red, blistered, and painful. Third-degree burns: white or charred, painless, and dry. First Aid: Keep the injured area cool with water. Do not apply ice or ice water directly to the skin. Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth or bandage. Do not break blisters. Do not apply ointments, creams, or butter to the burn. Do not remove clothing stuck to the burn. Seek medical attention for severe burns. Chemical Burns: Chemical burns occur when chemicals come into contact with the skin. The severity of the burn depends on the type of chemical, the concentration of the chemical, and the duration of contact. Strong acids and bases can cause severe burns. Other household chemicals, such as bleach, can also cause burns. First Aid for Chemical Burns: Remove the source of the chemical, if possible. Flush the affected area with cool water for at least 15 minutes. Remove any clothing or jewelry that may have been contaminated with the chemical. Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth or bandage. Seek medical attention immediately. Sun Burn Symptoms: Direct exposure to the sun's rays may produce redness, itching of the skin.
