Glucose Tolerance Test This diagnostic test of diabetes is also known as the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Test Conditions: The person should have the carbohydrate rich diet for atleast 3 days. The person should fast overnight to avoid the influence of postprandial rise in blood glucose levels. To test the OGTT, the person should have fasting blood glucose level. In the morning, blood samples are taken after fasting and 2 hours after consuming glucose. A 75 g oral glucose load is consumed. Glucose Tolerance Test The subject is given 75 g of glucose orally dissolved in 300 ml of water to be consumed in about 5 minutes. Blood glucose samples are collected at 0, 30, 60 and 120 minutes after glucose consumption. All blood samples are collected at least 5 ml of blood. Glucose estimation in the blood samples to assess the rate of glucose absorption and utilization of glucose. The fasting blood glucose level in a healthy person is 70-100 mg/dl. For normal persons, the fasting blood glucose level is expected within 70-100 mg/dl, and the 2-hour glucose level is again below 140 mg/dl. Fasting blood glucose above 126 mg/dl on two separate occasions is diagnostic of diabetes. Impaired Glucose Tolerance Occurs when fasting glucose level is normal. It signifies that the body has difficulty handling the sugar load so that the glucose remains high. The specimen shows glucose tolerance, leads to diabetes if in case of hyperglycemia. The condition sets in between the normal values and complete.
