Stabilization of Victim in the Water Quickly remove the victim from water and place them on their back. Clear the airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin. Assess breathing and circulation. If necessary, start artificial respiration immediately. If in deeper waters, while towing the victim, turn the victim face down to prevent water from entering the lungs. Once the victim is out of the water, place them on their side and cover them with a blanket. Raise the victim’s head and chest to drain the water from the lungs. Check breathing and heartbeat, and continue resuscitation if necessary. If breathing has stopped, keep the body warm with blankets and hot drinks like coffee and tea. Shift them to the hospital in the semi-sitting position. Things to remember: The change from seawater to warm water is more dangerous than the change from cold water to warm water. If fresh water drowning occurs, water passes into the lungs and blood. This causes dilution of blood. If the person drowns in salt water, salt from the water passes into the lungs and blood. This causes concentration of blood. Complications Hypothermia: Decreased body temperature due to prolonged exposure to cold water. Respiratory distress: Difficulty breathing due to water inhalation. Tissue damage and fluid imbalance in the body. Muscles and joints injuries. Prevention Infant should not be left alone. Everybody should be taught how to swim. Never swim alone. When the pool is closed, it is important to know the depth of water. Wear a life jacket. Close a pool cover. Use a safety fence around the pool.
