Joints Classification of Joints Definition A joint is formed where two or more joints articulate together. Classification of Joints There are three types of joints: Fibrous joints Cartilaginous joints Synovial joints 1. Fibrous Tissue The articulating surfaces of the bones are connected by dense fibrous connective tissue. 1. Fibrous Tissue The articulating surfaces of bones are connected with fibrous tissue. There are three types of fibrous tissue: Suture or Sutural Joint: Syndesmosis Gomphosis 2. Cartilaginous Joint Bones are united either by hyaline cartilage or by fibrocartilage. The cartilaginous joint allows limited movement. 3. Synovial Joints They are most common and important joints in the body. They normally provide free movement. Components of Synovial Joints Articular Surface Articular Cartilage Synovial Fluid Synovial Membrane Joint Cavity Articular Capsule Articular Disc Labrum Ligaments
