The Caste System The English word 'caste' originated from the Portuguese word 'casta', meaning 'race, breed'. Origin of Indian Caste System A number of theories have been proposed to explain the origin of the Indian caste system. Religious Theory Biological Theory Political Theory Occupational Theory Evolution Theory A) Religious Theory According to this theory, the division of Indian society was based on Brahma's divine manifestation. Caste system originated from the body of Brahma: Brahmins: From the mouth came. Kshatriyas: From arms came. Vaishyas: From thighs came. Shudras: From feet came. B) Biological Theory: All existing entities inherit one of 3 qualities: Sattva, Rajas, Tamas. The Varnas based on the predominance of various qualities. It is the combination of these qualities in various proportion that constitutes a group or class. Sattva qualities are associated with wisdom, intelligence, honesty, Rajas qualities are associated with pride, passion, Tamas qualities are associated with dullness and lack of creativity. C) Racial Theory: According to this theory caste system emerged due to coming in contact of different races and a consequence of clash of cultures. It is a common belief that the caste system was formed during the period of migration of Indo-Aryans to the Indian subcontinent. D) Political Theory: The caste system did not originate on the basis of race but was a result of manipulation by those who wanted authority. E) Occupational theory: This theory says that caste system evolved gradually through a long drawn process. The development of caste system was influenced by various factors such as hereditary occupations, culture, foreign invasions, colour and racial prejudice and static nature of the Hindu society.
