Positive Impacts of Culture on Health and Wellness Yoga and Medicine: Yoga is associated with the culture and heritage of India. Yoga stems historically from Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The practice of yoga and meditation support the healing process and reduce stress. Fasting: The practice of fasting on holy days is prevalent among most religions. It provides several health benefits such as weight loss, blood sugar control, and reduction in inflammation. Living in Joint Family Systems: The joint family system, which is still prevalent in India, helps in proper development of child behavior. Religious Restrictions in Food Habits: While in certain religions, there is a restriction on consumption of pork, in certain other religions, consumption of beef is restricted. These are good habits from the health point of view as they prevent the occurrence of certain diseases. Alcohol Prohibition: In some religions, consumption of alcohol is prohibited. 2. Personal Hygiene: Taking regular bath and washing hands are major forms of hygiene in all cultures. The habit of brushing teeth and having bath in the morning ensures good hygiene and health. All these practices improve cleanliness and good health. 7. Restriction of marriage within close relationships: Across all cultures, there is an incest taboo, a culture norm that prohibits sexual relationships between close members of the same family, mainly between individuals related by blood. Close relatives who marry one another are more likely to have children with genetic diseases.
